Can fiber posts be luted with light-initiated composite resin?

Introduction: Fiber posts are commonly used to restore endodontically treated teeth.With regard to resin cements, inadequate polymerization of light-activated resins was recorded at deeper levels of the post space.In the deeper regions, is insufficient for clinical luminous activation of resin. The present study investigated light-transmitting ability through the newly developed esthetic post systems.
    Material and Method:
  1. Directly evaluation of light transmission behaviour
    The integrating sphere with lux sensor on the bottom was able to read the passage of light
    directly.Evaluate the passage of light at the apical third, middle third, and cervical third.
  2. Indirectly evaluation of light transmission behaviour
    Customized mold was filled with shade A1 (Z-350XT,3M) restorative resin composite.A fiber post with an anchor was then placed into the centre of the mold. The sample was photoactivated for 1 minute. Hardness measurements were made on the top to the bottom surfaces of the 2mm thick section at specific distances from the post.
    Result:
  1. The quantity of luminous energy transmitted depend on the type of post.For all the posts, depth increased,the quantity of light transmitted decreased. In the deepest regions, is insufficient for clinical luminous activation of resin.
  2. Vickers microhardness measurement points within each section.Reduced degree of conversion may lower the mechanical properties of resin composites.To achieve the 80% threshold value only the iLumi post is an effective means of light-polymerizing resin cement to a depth of 4 mm in an aluminum mold.
    Conclusion:
  1. iLumi fiber optic posts had significantly greater light transmitting ability than other tested groups.
  2. iLumi post is an effective means of light-polymerizing resin cement to a depth of 4mm in an aluminum mold.
  3. Future studies should assess the degree of conversion using different light-cured composite resin of this new fiber optic post.
